Here are some links with friends of ours who do great folk music or help it to happen! Please check out their sites. A bunch of additional folk musician links can be found on the Quakers & Music page elsewhere on this site.
Lou & Peter Berryman are prolific songwriters unparalleled for their humorous songs including the classic "Chat with Your Mom". Their concerts are not to be missed!
Premier children's musicians & Grammy winners Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer have been mentors for us as we've pursued our own musical careers together - helping us in a thousand ways from advice on choosing a sound system to touring tips to getting a Santa Cruz guitar. (cathymarcy.com)
Bob Franke is a thoughtful & powerful singer songwriter. His religious songs particularly speak to us, often taking traditional Christian themes and presenting them in challenging new ways. "Beggars to God", "Still Small Voice" and "The Great Storm Is Over" are among our favorite songs to perform. He also leads terrific songleading workshops. Annie wrote her song "Come to My Table" (recorded on her Deep Roots cassette) during a workshop Bob led at Pendle Hill.
We are big fans as well as friends of Kim & Reggie Harris. They travel the country performing and leading school programs related to racism and the Underground Railroad. They have frequently performed with Magpie. Magpie is Greg Artzner & Terry Leonino. They perform songs about environmental awareness, labor struggles & social justice - as well as presenting terrific music. We sell recordings by both of these duos.
Pat Humphries & Sandy O are an activist, feminist musical duo. Pat is an incredible songwriter whose credits include "Swimming to the Other Side". She was a member of the selection committee for Spread Your Wings, the (slowly) forthcoming sequel to Rise Up Singing.
Si Kahn has been working as a deeply dedicated and effective community organizing activist, trainer and songwriter/performer for decades. He is author of 14 songs in Rise Up Singing including "Aragon Mill", "People Like You", "Gone, Gonna Rise Again" and "Rubber Blubber Whale". We had a terrible time trying to limit to a reasonable number how many of his songs are to be included in the sequel to Rise Up Singing! Also check out the website for Grassroots Leadership, the North Carolina-based training/organizing group he leads.
Charlie King & Karen Brandow are another duo of socially conscious activists that make great music. They are based in western Massachusetts. We were honored to do a peace concert with them in the weeks following 9/11. Charlie has several terrifc songs in Rise Up Singing including "Two Good Arms".
AFM Local 1000 is the Traveling Musicians local of the American Federation of Musicians. This union local provides support for musicians through a pension fund, inexpensive instrument insurance and insuring that employers treat folk musicians fairly and honor their agreements. A good number of the leading folk artists in this country are members of this local. We are proud to be members too!
Appleseed Recordings is a label specially devoted to music that promotes social justice. The label was launched with the double CD "Where Have All the Flowers Gone: Songs of Pete Seeger, Vol. 1" (see the Seeger webpage on this site). We sell many of Appleseed's recordings including CDs by Charlie King & Karen Brandow, Eric Anderson and Kim & Reggie Harris. Appleseed is based around the corner from us in West Chester PA and ably run by our friend Jim Musselman. Jim has done a terrific job of championing and strengthening politically-conscious folk music in this country.
Sing Out is the nonpofit organization that publishes Rise Up Singing & the Teaching Disks. They also publish a terrific quarterly magazine, have a terrific resource center located in Bethlehem PA.and publishes Legacy Books. Sing Out was founded in 1950 by Pete Seeger. We urge you to consider joining Sing Out as a way of supporting folk music and folk musicians.

promoting efforts to secure a Nobel Peace Prize for legendary folk singer & environmental & peace activist, Pete Seeger. A new edition of Seeger's autobiography (which Peter edited) is coming out this spring.
There are some great quotes from Pete on the power of group singing in the recent New York Times article on community sings around the country, many of which use Rise Up Singing.
